1/2 Pound Rhubarb Crumble ...

... more about that title in a moment!

A little while ago I was contacted by the folks from The Handpicked Collection, and they asked me if I would like to road test their Rocking Glasses.  Would I?!!?  Of course I jumped at the chance, if there is one thing I love almost as much as baking (aside from chocolate of course!) its all the lovely kitchen goodies that go along with it.

These rocking glasses were crying out to be used in a layered dessert.  I really wanted to make one of the luscious chocolate mousse recipes I have spied on blogs recently, like this one from Katie at Apple and Spice or this little beauty from Johanna at Green Gourmet Giraffe.  Instead, I opted to make Hubby's fave, Crunchy Rhubarb Oat Crumble.  The deciding factor for this was mostly the five packs of rhubarb that were sitting on the kitchen bench.

'Naked Crumble' (cooked but without custard)

To make the individual portions I simple divided the rhubarb and crumble topping evenly among the 4 glasses which I sat in a small tin to help keep them upright, my oven wouldn't thank me for wobbly bottoms over spills!  I couldn't quite manage to squish all the crumble topping on so the rest of it is now sitting in the freezer awaiting the next crumble venture.

I was counting on the rhubarb cooking down and the whole dessert 'sinking' a wee bit so there would be room for custard to serve.  To help this process along a small amount of water was added to the pan holding the glasses.  It worked a treat ... maybe a bit too well in hindsight as an awful lot of custard seemed to fit in.

We both seemed to prefer the crumble cooked in individual portions, the crumble topping was more crumbly  and the fruit cooked down to a very scrummy compote.  As for why I now call this '1/2 pound Rhubarb Crumble' ... well, they tasted so good that I had to have my fair share, along with the custard, and managed to put on half a pound this week ;0(

'Dressed' Crumbles
Of course, I believe the real damage on the scales was caused by wearing jeans and getting caught in the lovely autumnal downpour on the way to my class, so the 1/2 pound was really the water weighing down my jeans and my sodden hair.  But my consultant was having none of that, she is a canny being!  And with the BBC Good Food Show this weekend what do you think my chances are loosing weight this week.  Ho-hum ;0)

Big thanks to The Handpicked Collection for sending me the glasses (but not the weight gain!) and please take some time this weekend to browse their website.  I have my eye on a few of their products for Christmas presents this year.  And if you need even more inspiration then they have just launched a new website called The Handpicked Foodstore that is sure to have you licking your computer monitor or laptop screen!

  2. Oh yes please Chele, they look wonderful. I wasted a batch of rhubarb in a smoothie that didn't work out too well yesterday :(

    1. What a shame Jac. Rhubarb can be so temperamental can't it.

  5. And here I was thinking you were going to have used half a pound of rhubarb! I don't think there's too much custard - I don't understand the concept of 'too much' when it comes to custard!

  7. Those glasses are adorable, but did I get it right - you baked the crumble in the glasses IN THE OVEN?

    1. Yeah I did [sheepish grin]. That was part of the reason for the water bath but I was still a bit worried. Worked in the end though teehee
